S607: Climate Change and the Future of Human Civilization in Splash Spring 2016 (Apr. 10, 2016)
Enrico Fermi, famous physicist from the early 1900s, theorized that the reason why there are no signs of intelligent life out in the universe is because intelligent life is destined to destroy itself. From observing how other semi-intelligent animals behave, such as primates, and even our fellow humans, it becomes clear that we are far from perfect. We fight with eachother, we don't always cooperate to find solutions to problems, etc., and intelligent life might not be a concept that is destined to work out. Right now, human beings are facing a tipping point where we are going to find out whether or not we could actually continue our survival on planet earth. Climate change is both a problem caused by humans, and a problem that only we can solve. Scientists predict that if we do not solve this crisis by the year 2100, the planet earth may no longer be habitable for humans. How exactly are humans causing this problem? How does the science behind it work? Why, if it seems so obvious that something needs to be done, isn't anything being done? Can humans finally work together to prove that intelligent life is a concept that can exist?

S258: Astrobiology: The Search for Life in the Universe in Splash Spring 2014 (Apr. 13, 2014)
Are we alone in the universe? This question has pondered mankind since ancient times. Even now, aliens are one of the most popular topics in science fiction. However, the idea may not be a fantasy for much longer. In recent years, research on searching for extraterrestrial life has exploded in a new field called Astrobiology. This class will provide a brief overview of Astrobiology, including topics such as methods used to search for extraterrestrial life, how life may have began on earth and places in the universe where we believe alien life might exist, such as mars.
