Brief Biographical Sketch:

My name is Assaf Shahar, I am 23 years old and I am currently majoring in Psychology at Clark University. I am an active member in a great variety of Clark's clubs, such as being president of the Ping Pong club, as well as serving on the University Judicial Board.

I have been singing for about 9 years now. In high school, I was a member of a men's quartet, a men's octet, and the school's advanced chorus. Since 2008, I have been singing a style of music called barbershop, founded on the basis of harmony and pure tone production. My local barbershop chorus has competed in the International Barbershop Competition for four consecutive years, and we continue to learn and improve year after year. I have also participated in a Youth Chorus event in Carnegie Hall in NYC, performing in front of thousands of people.

Here at Clark, I am one of the founding members of a jazz acapella group called Blue Notes, as well as having started up my own barbershop quartet called Side Note. I am also a member of Clark Bars, one of Clark's coed acapella groups on campus.

I look forward to meeting you!

X368: How to Sing: Foundational Singing Technique Drawn from Barbershop Harmony in Splash Fall 2014 (Nov. 16, 2014)
Have you been looking for a way to improve your singing? Have you wondered what goes into the best singing performances? This course will touch upon the basics of singing, including such things as: diaphragm control and the body's involvement in singing; reducing tension in singing; classical versus pop-style of vocal production; mental techniques to keep in mind while singing; and much more! This course will be taught by Assaf Shahar. Assaf has been singing barbershop for 6 1/2 years, ranging from backyard parties to international competitions. In his experience, barbershop has proven to be one of the most influential music movements; it is focused on the purity of harmony, though not secondary to the brotherhood and friendships that emerge from the act of singing together. Sign up for this class and spend a fun-filled hour learning how techniques drawn from barbershop can help you learn how to sing and improve your singing. Assaf will also be available via email in directing you to the nearest barbershop chapter in your area, just ask!
